Digital Journalism Skills Summer Intensives Program at CUNY 2019
The Digital Journalism Skills Summer Intensives is a two-week, accelerated program that offers social media, fact-checking, audio, and video training at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. All we could use to capture footage, interviews, and images were our smartphones. Below you can find samples of the work I did while reporting on-the-streets of New York City.
For one of our first assignments, we were sent out to ask workers in New York City how they feel about their jobs. Here's one story of a gardener working at Bryant Park in Manhattan.
While in Bryant Park, I found a carousel operator who shared her perspective about her whimsical job.
Another assignment had us do man-on-the street interviews during lunch hour. The following are a series of tweets where we asked New Yorkers to describe their jobs “In One Word.”

Continuing on the theme of labor, we were assigned to create a profile and photo essay of someone in New York for our Instagram. I ended up finding a camp counselor in Central Park.
Towards the end of the program, we were asked to find an immigrant to NYC and ask them “How does your job make you feel part of New York City?” That led me to a beauty salon in Harlem where I met a woman from Brazil working as a receptionist.
For our final project, we were sent to ask people, “How does the gender pay gap impact you or someone you know?” Here are what two different people at Bryant Park had to say.
Finally, here is some fun footage from learning how to fly a drone at one of the only parks where it’s permitted in New York City!
